Max Domi’s Status Uncertain After Surgery

Max Domi, a forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs, recently had surgery, pausing his NHL career. On May 25, the Leafs announced Domi’s surgery addressed an issue from the 2025-26 season. The 31-year-old’s procedure type wasn’t disclosed, but complications have rendered him out indefinitely.

The announcement of Domi’s indefinite absence was unexpected during the team’s offseason, given his participation in 80 games this past season. Max Domi, wearing #11, was last seen in action against the Washington Capitals at Scotiabank Arena on April 8, 2026.

Details on Domi’s surgery remain scarce. However, the Toronto Sun reported that Domi had back surgery, after which he was unable to walk for several days. This information suggests a severe challenge ahead for him.

It was mentioned that Domi selected his own surgeon rather than the team’s recommendation. In professional sports, players often choose their preferred surgeon. Steve Simmons noted, “Whatever happened here wasn’t deemed successful. Apparently, Domi could not walk in the days following surgery, which created significant alarm. His status remains in doubt for the coming season.”

Domi, who was instrumental in Toronto’s lineup, joined the team as a free agent in 2023. He played at least 74 games in each of his three seasons since signing a multi-year deal. Before joining Toronto, Domi, drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in 2013, achieved a personal best of 72 points in the 2018-19 NHL season with the Montreal Canadiens.
