Scientists have achieved an extraordinary milestone by capturing unprecedented images of the sun’s surface. Utilizing the capabilities of the National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, situated in Maui, Hawaii, researchers have unveiled the sun’s complex and dynamic facade.
Direct observation of the sun’s surface poses significant risks without proper eye protection. However, this innovative telescope allowed scientists to observe the scorching surface with clarity. Originally, the images were intended for calibrating and testing the telescope. Instead, they unveiled the sun’s bright outer shell at a higher resolution than previously achieved.
Among the discoveries were peculiar feathery patterns, reminiscent of the swirling skies in Van Gogh’s Starry Night, noted by Ruizhu Chen, a solar physicist from Stanford University who was not part of the research. These patterns are due to instabilities created by magnetized plasma moving at varying speeds, resembling waves formed by wind over water — a phenomenon observed on Earth but never at such detail on the sun.
According to Friedrich Wöger from the National Solar Observatory, this detailed observation of the solar surface is unprecedented. Such understanding aids in comprehending the sun’s inner workings and tracking explosive events known as coronal mass ejections. These ejections can impact Earth, potentially disrupting GPS systems and lighting up skies with auroras.
The findings were published in the journal Nature, increasing scientists’ understanding of solar phenomena. This research can assist in predicting solar storms and safeguarding technology dependent on satellite communications.
