Meghan Markle’s Royal Experience and the Challenges Faced

Meghan Markle’s time as a working royal might have been complicated by a clash in cultural expectations, according to Simon Vigar, a seasoned royal correspondent. His insights are detailed in his new book, “The Four Wives of Windsor.” While Kensington Palace declined to comment, representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex also chose not to give a statement.

Vigar noted that Meghan and Prince Harry initially thrived under royal duties, as evidenced by their successful 2018 tour of Australia and beyond. Nonetheless, underlying issues began to surface, primarily due to differences in how events were managed.

“There was a culture clash,” Vigar remarked, adding that both egos on either side contributed to the tension.

Meghan, who gained fame as an actress in “Suits,” joined the royal family accustomed to a highly controlled Hollywood environment. Vigar suggests that this did not align well with the public service nature of royal roles.

During their overseas tour, Meghan’s visit to Suva Market in Fiji, meant to highlight women’s empowerment, ended abruptly, allegedly due to security concerns. However, Vigar questions this narrative, suggesting other possible factors like illness.

Vigar highlights that Meghan was working under tight schedules while pregnant, adding pressure to the situation. One royal aide noted her understanding of public appearances, yet found her less equipped for the cultural aspects of royal life.

Reports emerged of palace aides leaving their posts due to alleged mistreatment by Meghan, which she denies. The Duchess has repeatedly criticized both the British tabloid press and the royal institution for lack of support.

According to Vigar, while Harry and Meghan believe the palace did not support them adequately, his viewpoint suggests otherwise. He argues that a cultural disconnect played a pivotal role, with Meghan, initially unfamiliar with the royal family, facing an institution steeped in tradition.

In 2020, the couple stepped back from royal duties and moved to California, seeking a different life away from royal expectations.
