Menendez Brothers Granted Earlier Parole Hearing

4 weeks ago 0

Erik and Lyle Menendez are now set for a parole hearing in March 2027, one year sooner than expected. Originally scheduled for August 2028, the change follows provisions in Proposition 9. A prisoner’s parole date can be adjusted if new information or different circumstances suggest parole suitability, reports The Orange County Register.

The Menendez brothers were convicted of murdering their parents, Jose and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, on August 20, 1989. The incident happened at their home in Beverly Hills. Initially sentenced to life without parole, the brothers were resentenced to life in May 2025, allowing parole eligibility. This change followed public support influenced by a Netflix series about their case.

Erik and Lyle’s family released a statement highlighting the brothers’ efforts over nearly 40 years. They have worked to accept responsibility for their actions and overcome past trauma. Their contributions include establishing a hospice program and creating Green Space. This initiative aims to remind life-sentenced individuals of the meaningfulness of their lives. The family appreciates the Parole Board’s decision to reschedule the hearing.

At a previous hearing, the Menendez brothers recounted enduring sexual abuse by their father. Prosecutors have refuted these claims, suggesting that greed motivated the murders. Despite being denied parole last year, the family holds hope for the future, seeing potential for the brothers to rejoin their daily lives.

Lyle, 58, and Erik, 55, remain incarcerated at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.
