Michael Kim made history during the second round of the 3M Open on Friday. At age 33, Kim aimed for the rare achievement of a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour. Heading into the 18th hole, he was set on completing the feat with a birdie putt from 24 feet away.
He concentrated on delivering the putt with enough power, saying, “I tend to leave those short when it’s uphill, so I focused on getting it there.” Kim succeeded, sinking the putt and celebrating with fist pumps.
During the round, Kim managed several impressive runs, including five consecutive birdies starting from the third hole. He finished his round strong with four straight birdies. Kim’s putting was exceptional, as eight of his 11 birdies came from distances over 10 feet.
Kim commented, “When a putt does exactly what you expect, it’s an awesome feeling.” His remarkable performance placed him three shots ahead of Ben Kohles. Despite his success, Kim understands the tournament is only halfway over. “Today was great, but I need to focus for the weekend,” he remarked.
Kim’s score of 59 is the fourth on tour since 2024, with Jake Knapp achieving the last in the 2025 Cognizant Classic opening round. Jim Furyk holds the record for the lowest score on the PGA Tour with a 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship.
