Tua Tagovailoa’s tenure with the Atlanta Falcons has been challenging, leading to a potential boost in urgency regarding Michael Penix Jr.’s return from injury. Tagovailoa, who joined the Falcons after being released by the Miami Dolphins, was expected to perform well enough to begin the season as the starting quarterback. This transition would provide Penix additional recovery time from his ACL injury.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Tagovailoa’s inconsistent showcase during training camp and his first preseason outing has shifted the spotlight on Penix. The Falcons are reportedly considering him for the starting role following Tagovailoa’s underwhelming performance.
“The organization anticipated Tagovailoa’s readiness to start the season, allowing Penix a gradual comeback,’ stated Rapoport. “Ideally, Penix would remain inactive for the initial games to ensure a full recovery.”
Tagovailoa’s lackluster statistics in his first preseason match against the Denver Broncos—completing 3-of-5 passes for 22 yards—led head coach Kevin Stefanski to replace him with Jack Strand and Cooper Rush.
As the Falcons open opportunities for Penix, he is expected to share first-team reps and potentially commence Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers if deemed fit. Falcons’ management emphasizes competition throughout their program. “Competition is integral here,” Stefanski remarked, highlighting the continuous push among players.
Despite the setback, Tagovailoa aims for redemption in the upcoming preseason face-off against the Miami Dolphins, hoping to regain coaching confidence before the Falcons’ Week 1 clash in Pittsburgh.
Decisions remain pending as the Falcon’s coaching staff, led by Stefanski, evaluate the strategic starting QB choice approaching the season debut.
