Tom Smith, a Republican who initially suspended his campaign and endorsed his opponent, has re-entered the race after winning the primary. Smith appeared at a GOP unity event in Macomb County, where he declared his intention to contest for the congressional seat. Addressing fellow Republicans, he emphasized the need for their support to challenge Rivet. Despite winning the primary, Smith did not respond to inquiries about the official restart of his campaign, but his words suggested his commitment. “My name is Tom Smith, and I’m running for the 8th Congressional District to unseat communist comrade Rivet,” Smith announced, hinting at the intensity of the upcoming election.

“I’m humbled and honored to take this fight to the Democrats in the November general election,” Smith reportedly stated in a communication with CNN.

Previously, Smith endorsed Al Lemmo, a fellow contender in the primary, after exiting the race. Lemmo ultimately finished third, behind Smith and Amir Hassan, the Trump-endorsed candidate. Despite Hassan’s defeat, he gracefully accepted the results and congratulated his opponents.

In a video shared on social media post-election, Hassan admitted his shortcomings but maintained a positive outlook about future opportunities. He expressed gratitude to his supporters and reiterated the ongoing Republican goal of capturing the 8th District seat. “I fell short last night. I make no excuse. It was a tough race,” Hassan stated. He mentioned faith in future plans and assured his followers of continued efforts.
