Michigan Senate Candidate’s Alliance with Influencer Raises Concerns

4 weeks ago 0

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed aligns with Hasan Piker, a left-wing influencer with a controversial background. Some within the Democratic Party worry that this association could impact their prospects in the upcoming Michigan Senate race, as it may alienate swing voters.

Piker, known for making inflammatory remarks regarding 9/11, holds a substantial online following. His comments reportedly include suggestions that America deserved the attacks on September 11, which lack patriotism according to his critics.

As Americans reflect on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, El-Sayed’s public campaign schedule for that day includes events like a Mexican festival, a farmers market, and a county fair but makes no mention of a remembrance event. His campaign later confirmed attendance at a memorial event, though it was not listed on his website.

“The September 11th terrorist attacks were an evil attack on America’s freedom,” El-Sayed’s spokeswoman remarked, emphasizing his commitment to joining in the remembrance.

Campaign Event Details

The events on El-Sayed’s campaign schedule mostly feature festivities. For instance, the Fiesta Mexicana is described as an event filled with mariachi music, various vendors, and celebrations of Mexican culture. Other events include a farmers market and the Allegan County Fair, known for its entertainment, food, and games.

Despite these events, El-Sayed was not planned to attend two of the four flagged by Fox News Digital, though his campaign did not clarify which ones.

Complex Relationship with 9/11

El-Sayed’s campaign faced scrutiny when past statements about 9/11 resurfaced. His association with Piker is problematic for some due to Piker’s past comments suggesting America “deserved 9/11.” El-Sayed labeled such remarks as “dumb” but did not explicitly distance himself from Piker.

Additionally, El-Sayed drew attention to former controversial statements by equating the September 11 attacks with other significant national events, such as January 6, on his now-private blog. He has also been vocal on social media about America’s War on Terror and the COVID-19 pandemic, calling for similar outrage as felt for 9/11.
