US Military Actions in the Arabian Sea

The top US military commander in the Middle East, Adm. Brad Cooper, visited the USS Lincoln, stationed in the Arabian Sea, as part of a regional tour. Reports highlighted issues of mental health and supply shortages among the crew. The USS Lincoln has been deployed longer than usual, spending over 240 days at sea. This ship supports the US war effort against Iran and enforces a blockade on Iranian ports. Adm. Cooper described this deployment as one of the most intense and significant in recent history.

During his tour, Cooper visited Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to engage with both civilian and military leaders.

Challenges in the Strait of Hormuz

The US Navy’s blockade remains a response to Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz. This action followed the onset of hostilities on February 28, marked by US and Israeli strikes. Before the conflict, the strait facilitated around 20% of the world’s trade in oil and natural gas.

US-Iran talks have seen little progress. Meanwhile, Iran discusses strait management with Oman.

Gaza Ceasefire Negotiations

A Hamas delegation, led by Khalil al-Hayya, visited Egypt for discussions on the Gaza ceasefire. They met with Major Gen. Hassan Rashad of Egypt’s intelligence service. Al-Hayya emphasized Hamas’ commitment to implementing President Donald Trump’s peace plan to ease Gaza residents’ hardships and initiate reconstruction efforts.

Mediators aim to advance a roadmap involving Hamas’ disarmament, withdrawal of Israeli forces, and transferring power to Palestinian technocrats. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu objected, refusing territorial withdrawal until Hamas is disarmed.

Concurrently, US negotiator Jared Kushner met with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi to discuss both Israel’s and Hamas’ obligations under the ceasefire agreement.

Israeli Strikes in Lebanon

Israel’s military targeted two Hezbollah commanders in southern Lebanon. These strikes, deemed the deadliest since a truce began, resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals as reported by Lebanon’s Health Ministry. The Israeli military identified the commanders as Abu Hassan Alaa and Ali Samir Al-Haj Hassan. These operations are part of Israel’s strategy following a framework agreement that anticipates Hezbollah’s disarmament in exchange for Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

Iran-Qatar Dispute

Iran accused Qatar of holding three Iranian pilots missing since March. The pilots’ jets were reportedly downed, and Qatar denies holding them. Iranian authorities requested Qatar permit their experts to investigate, marking the first claim of regional detainment of Iranian fighters in this conflict.

Continued Strikes in Gaza

An Israeli strike wounded five individuals, including a seriously injured child, in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. The attack targeted a member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The Gaza Health Ministry reported a total of 1,262 Palestinian fatalities since hostilities resumed. Despite a ceasefire, Israeli airstrikes persist, maintaining a pattern of conflict and resistance.
