Mike Tomlin’s New Role and Continuing Speculation of His Coaching Future

46 minutes ago 0

Mike Tomlin stepped down as the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach in January after 19 seasons. His departure followed the team’s early playoff exit against the Houston Texans. Since then, Tomlin has taken on a new role as part of the NBC Sports broadcasting team. He regularly appears on pre-game, halftime, and postgame coverage of ‘Sunday Night Football’ games.

Though Tomlin seems to enjoy his new broadcasting duties, speculation lingers about his potential return to coaching. During a conversation with Kay Adams, NFL Hall of Famer Cris Carter criticized Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni. Carter hinted that Tomlin could be a suitable replacement. ‘It takes a poor coach to do what he did at the end of the game, taking victory away from NFL players,’ Carter said of Sirianni.

Carter criticized Sirianni’s decision during the Eagles’ recent game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. With only eight seconds left, the Eagles attempted what seemed to be a game-winning field goal. Despite this, they chose not to kick the ball into the end zone for a touchback. Jacksonville took advantage, returning the kick to midfield and calling a timeout with a second on the clock. Their kicker then made a 57-yard field goal, handing a heartbreaking loss to the Eagles.

Sirianni accepted responsibility for the error, acknowledging how it cost his team victory after their hard effort. Carter questioned Sirianni’s approach, asking, ‘What would Mike Tomlin look like in Philadelphia? What would he have done in that situation?’ Carter believed Tomlin would have avoided putting the Eagles in such a predicament.

Earlier this year, Tomlin shared on Pro Football Focus’s NFL Show that he still loves coaching. He added he has ‘learned to never say never’ about returning. He also noted that his next coaching position would need to be the perfect fit for him, as not all team opportunities appeal to him.

As of now, Nick Sirianni continues as the Eagles’ head coach. Meanwhile, Tomlin enjoys his time focusing on sports broadcasting. However, Carter’s remarks introduce an intriguing possibility. Tomlin’s extensive experience and championship record could make him a desirable candidate if the Eagles decide on a coaching change.
