Minneapolis Council Member Faces Criticism Over Autonomous Vehicle Concerns

16 hours ago 0

A Minneapolis city council member, Jason Chavez, has sparked widespread discussion on social media by addressing concerns about autonomous vehicles allegedly harming cats. Chavez stated during a council meeting that Waymo’s self-driving cars have killed cats and called for regulations mandating human operators in these vehicles.

I will say cats have been killed and cats have been killed by these autonomous vehicles, Chavez shared with his colleagues. He expressed concerns about his own pet’s safety, emphasizing the need for cat lovers to be aware of the issue. Chavez’s view is that having human operators in driverless vehicles can prevent these incidents.

Despite the ordinance passing narrowly on Thursday, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey plans to veto it, believing it doesn’t make sense for a city pursuing innovative technology solutions, including transportation advances. Frey recognized safety concerns but rejected what he described as a backdoor ban on autonomous vehicles.

A video circulating of Waymo vehicles has stirred emotions, showcasing the cars running without human drivers around city neighborhoods. Critics argue that requiring humans to accompany such technology would significantly increase costs and impact service accessibility, while supporters highlight safety risks and job displacement.

Following Chavez’s remarks, social media responses ranged from mockery to outrage. Comments accused him of exaggerating the situation and overlooking significant city issues like crime and economic management. Posts on X criticized the diversion from urgent concerns in Minneapolis, questioning Chavez’s salary and priorities.

Fox News Digital columnist David Marcus also commented, pointing out socioeconomic concerns affecting families in Minneapolis more than Waymo vehicles. In contrast, some social media users shared experiences with other autonomous technologies like Tesla, which have effectively avoided harming animals.

Fox News Digital sought comments from Chavez regarding the debate.
