Members of Minnesota’s Somali community, including a city council member, expressed strong reactions following a raid on Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence. The raid was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents on Monday.
Community Members Voice Concerns
Jamal Osman, the Somali-born vice president of the Minneapolis City Council, spoke out against President Donald Trump and his administration. He expressed feelings of attack within the Somali community due to the raid, stating, “Somalis — we all feel attacked by President Trump.” Osman criticized the administration’s actions and commented on ICE’s impact on their community.
“We have seen the threats, the horrific language he uses against my community. It’s unacceptable, and we’re hoping this could stop,” Osman stated.
An additional voice of concern came from Abdi, a 37-year-old social worker in Minneapolis, who declined to provide his last name. He further criticized the raid, suggesting it served as a dehumanizing act towards Congresswoman Omar by Trump’s “regime.” Abdi claimed that Trump’s actions had fostered an environment of harassment for Somali individuals in America.
Reactions from the Community
A 22-year-old Somali American woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared her expectations of the raid. She acknowledged ongoing scrutiny around Omar’s immigration status, saying, “I thought it was bound to happen soon enough.” She noted the government’s continuous questioning of Omar’s naturalization and immigration history.
Government and Administration Response
The White House directed inquiries to Trump’s prior comments about the raid, where he expressed personal disdain for Omar, saying, “I think she’s a terrible person. Just a complainer.” Trump denied involvement in the Department of Justice’s decision, referencing it as outside his direct control.
The raid relates to allegations that Omar and her late father may have misrepresented her citizenship paperwork. The investigation might result in denaturalization.
Omar addressed the situation on social media, describing the raid as an abuse of federal power designed to target political adversaries. She remarked, “This raid by Trump’s DHS is an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies.”
