U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi and his family were at the Aurora Hindu temple on Sunday when a 19-year-old man from Palatine allegedly tried to conduct a mass shooting. The suspect, identified as Alexandros Paporakis, reportedly attempted to fire his weapon at the temple, but his rifle malfunctioned.
Krishnamoorthi expressed his horror over the incident, emphasizing the targeting of Indian Americans by a white supremacist. According to information from Cook County prosecutors, Paporakis shared his intentions with co-workers following the failed attempt and mentioned plans to try again. The co-workers alerted the police, leading to Paporakis’ arrest before he could make another attempt.
Authorities from Palatine confirmed they apprehended Paporakis on Sunday evening as he was leaving his residence. During the investigation, police discovered a manifesto titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)” filled with extremist and supremacist views attributed to Paporakis. Officers also seized weapons, ammunition, tactical gear, body armor, and items linked to white supremacy from his home.
Paporakis is currently held in Cook County Jail on charges of making a terrorist threat and illegal weapon possession, with a court appearance set for October 30. Representative Krishnamoorthi highlighted the dangers posed by anti-Indian hate and white supremacy, stressing the importance of addressing these threats proactively.
The Consulate General of India acknowledged law enforcement’s prompt response in a statement, expressing gratitude for their actions. Officials stated they are maintaining communication with the Indian community and are closely watching developments.
