Missile Strikes Escalate in Ukraine Amid Air Defense Shortage

Rescue workers continued efforts at a damaged apartment building following a Russian air attack in Lviv, Ukraine, on Thursday, July 30, 2026. A Russian ballistic missile and drone barrage across Ukraine overnight led to tragic outcomes. At least eight civilians, including children, were reported dead, and dozens were injured, according to officials.

The widespread assault extended Russia’s frequent bombardment of Ukrainian cities. This move by Russia appears aimed at exploiting Kyiv’s critical shortage of Western-supplied anti-ballistic missile defenses. Meanwhile, NATO member Poland is investigating Ukrainian reports that a Russian cruise missile entered its airspace during the attack.

Regions across Ukraine, including those near the border with Poland, were targeted. These areas, distant from the front line, are crucial for Ukraine’s weapon storage and manufacturing for its defense against Russia’s over four-year-long invasion. Ukraine’s long-range drones and missiles have significantly impacted Russia’s oil sector, causing a fuel crisis.

This attack followed a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington. Zelenskyy urged for quicker and larger supplies of Patriot air defense systems, which are crucial for defending against Russia’s ballistic assaults. The Iran conflict has severely depleted stocks of American-made interceptors. Although Trump committed to allowing Ukraine to produce their own Patriots, setting up production will take time.

Zelenskyy praised Ukrainian forces for their professionalism in light of this missile shortage. He emphasized that protection against Russian missile threats remains vital for saving Ukrainian lives.

“Given the critical shortage of air defense missiles from our partners, our warriors are accomplishing truly incredible things, demonstrating a very high level of professionalism,” Zelenskyy said on social media.

According to Zelenskyy, attacks impacted at least 10 Ukrainian regions, damaging or destroying numerous homes, businesses, and infrastructure facilities. Over 70 missiles, many of them ballistic, were launched by Russia along with more than 280 attack drones. Ukrainian forces intercepted more than 260 of these drones.

The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the targets were military-oriented, including air bases, arms factories, and military telecommunications and logistics facilities. Rescuers continue searching through the wreckage in Lviv, where the air attack left a significant toll.

In Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian missile strikes claimed six lives and injured 10 people. Among the victims were children aged 6, 11, and 17. The children’s parents also died in the attack, though rescuers managed to save two more children from the debris.

In Kyiv, the Russian forces’ missile attacks killed a 31-year-old man and injured two others. Damage was reported to residential buildings, a market, a garage cooperative, storage facilities, and vehicles.

A cruise missile attack on Lviv injured 34 people, including children aged 6, 13, and 15. Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv regional military administration, stated that emergency teams were still assessing the damage.

In the Poltava region, a drone attack targeted company warehouses, killing one person.

A Russian Kh-101 cruise missile reportedly crossed into Poland, violating NATO airspace. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated on X that this event underlines the urgent need to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. While Polish authorities have not immediately confirmed this, they reported an unidentified object in their airspace, launching an F-16 to assess the situation. The object’s radar signature was lost before identification.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk examined the potential impact site near Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin province, but authorities have yet to confirm details.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported intercepting 258 Ukrainian drones overnight. In Russia’s Penza region, a depot for Wildberries, an online retailer, was hit by Ukraine, igniting the site and leading to an evacuation of 200 workers. Another Wildberries depot in Udmurtia was similarly targeted. Ukraine has criticized Wildberries for allegedly supplying goods beneficial to the Russian military.
