A Republican candidate for the Missouri state House faces federal drug charges after allegations surfaced of a scheme to frame his political opponent with drugs. Newly revealed court documents outline the details of the case.
Thomas Christopher Ross, age 37, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri. The court charged him with conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. The Department of Justice (DOJ) alleges that Ross, with his former campaign manager’s help, planned to place cocaine and prescription pills in his opponent Louise Secker’s belongings before the August primary.
According to an unsealed FBI affidavit, the campaign manager collaborated with law enforcement to collect evidence against Ross by wearing a recording device. This action led to Ross’s arrest.
“The circumstances of his arrest are serious and deeply troubling,” stated Peter Kinder, the Missouri Republican Party chairman. He emphasized that Republican nominees have responsibilities to uphold integrity and suggested Ross step down from the race. Having narrowly secured the nomination for Missouri’s District 161, Ross faces a critical decision with an impending deadline to withdraw by September 8.
Matthew Price, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, underscored the importance of maintaining trust in the electoral process. He stated that campaigns should be conducted with honesty to allow voters to make informed choices.
The DOJ reported receiving information about public corruption from the Joplin Police Department (JPD) on July 30. Ross’s campaign manager disclosed a plan to plant cocaine and an Adderall pill among Secker’s belongings. The scheme intended for the planting to occur while Ross was out of town.
In a crucial development on July 31, the campaign staffer recorded a conversation at Ross’s home. The recording captured discussions about the conspiracy to plant the drugs. Furthermore, court records included text messages dated back to May 31 that outlined detailed plots.
At the time of publishing, Fox News Digital could not reach Ross for comment. Alec Schemmel, a Politics Reporter for Fox News Digital, has reported on this unfolding story.
