MLB Issues Suspensions After Nationals-Red Sox Brawl

Major League Baseball announced four suspensions on Thursday following a brawl between the Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. The incident occurred during Tuesday night’s game.

Boston’s first baseman Willson Contreras and Washington’s starter Cade Cavalli were each handed seven-game suspensions and fined an undisclosed amount. The penalties arose from a clash in the fourth inning.

The conflict began when Cavalli struck Contreras out with a full-count pitch and taunted him by saying, “Sit down, boy.” Contreras responded by charging at Cavalli and throwing his batting helmet, leading to both benches clearing.

Two other players faced discipline for joining a separate scuffle. Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas received a five-game suspension, while Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton was suspended for three games. Both were also fined and ejected from the game.

All four suspensions are set to start on Friday. The Red Sox will play a series in Anaheim, while the Nationals are scheduled to host the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Red Sox may feel the impact more immediately. Contreras will miss a full week, whereas Cavalli and Mikolas might miss only one game in the rotation.

Cavalli expressed regret on Wednesday for using the term “boy.” He acknowledged its historical significance and mentioned losing sleep over the incident. Nationals management also discussed the issue with him.

As for Contreras, he faced emotional challenges recently. He was ejected the previous night for disputing a checked-swing call and has been vocal about the distress from earthquakes in Venezuela, his homeland.

If any player appeals, their suspension will be delayed until the MLB review process concludes.
