MLB Targets Yankees’ José Caballero for Pitch Clock Violation

New York Yankees shortstop José Caballero found himself at the center of a Major League Baseball (MLB) controversy regarding pitch clock rules. The league deemed Caballero’s routine as deceptive, resulting in a series of escalating events. Caballero’s habit of acknowledging the pitcher just before the pitch clock hit eight seconds drew scrutiny from MLB, culminating in a pitch-clock violation during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

During the sixth inning, plate umpire Quinn Wolcott charged Caballero with a pitch-clock violation. This decision led to Caballero’s strikeout and the ejection of Yankees hitting coach James Rowson. In the game, the Yankees lost a doubleheader opener against the Pirates, 5-3, in 10 innings.

Caballero argued that he was being unfairly targeted, stating, “I’ve seen other guys do some other things and they don’t call anything on them. They’re just picking on me.” He joined the Yankees after being acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays last July. Yankees manager Aaron Boone admitted that his view of Caballero shifted completely after the trade, mentioning humorous exchanges about the player’s pest-like tendencies.

Earlier in the season, Caballero received a warning for his deliberate actions with the pitch clock during a game at Toronto. This incident involved a prolonged discussion among Caballero, managers, and umpires. Tensions further escalated during the series against the Pirates when benches cleared after Caballero’s interactions with Pirates reliever Dennis Santana.

“He’s not allowed to do an inordinate amount of time looking down, trying to get the pitcher to cause a violation,” Wolcott explained. “There’s no other hitter that takes the amount of time that Caballero does.”

MLB’s adoption of the pitch clock in 2023 aimed to reduce game times, with different limits set for scenarios with and without runners. In cracking down on Caballero, MLB cited guidelines prohibiting batter conduct meant to deceive pitchers. Crew chief Adrian Johnson stated that the league’s action followed a bench-clearing incident in the series opener. He emphasized that MLB instructed them to enforce rules strictly without prior warning.

Boone expressed frustration, noting MLB did not notify the Yankees about the enforcement change. Based on earlier MLB conversations, Boone suggested Caballero be alert at nine seconds. Caballero expressed confusion over accusations of deception, highlighting consistency in his actions over numerous at-bats.

Caballero believes he’s being unfairly singled out, expressing that, “For everyone, it is eight seconds. For me it was nine.” He also emphasized the challenge of altering his routine, which helps him prepare for at-bats. He voiced concerns that pitchers could exploit timing rules to their advantage, holding the ball longer and affecting his readiness.
