The recent absence of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has sparked debates within Iranian political circles regarding the true leadership of the country. His absence has also highlighted growing divisions among Iran’s leaders.

The funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed at the onset of a U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, brought a temporary show of unity. Iranian officials stood solemnly next to the coffin during the ceremonies, which were meant to display strength and resilience.

This weeklong funeral, which started on Friday, gathered Iran’s top officials and senior military commanders. The president, the speaker of Parliament, the judiciary head, and top generals from the Revolutionary Guards Corps appeared publicly together for the first time since the war began months earlier.

The stark absence of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, appointed as the new supreme leader in March, was notable. Speculations about his absence have led to increased tensions.

In the weeks prior to the funeral, significant political struggles were observed. Senior Iranian leaders and political figures engaged in fierce debates on whether to negotiate with the United States. There were allegations of treason, coup plotting, and political manipulation.

Hassan Rahimpour-Azghadi, a prominent hard-liner, expressed his anger in a rally in Tehran. He vehemently opposed talks with the United States and called for retaliation for the leader’s demise.

Attempting to calm the situation, Ayatollah Khamenei issued a delicately phrased written statement. However, this only exacerbated the tensions. Hard-liners have demanded that the supreme leader should publicly appear or release an audio message to quell their concerns.
