Morton Grove Hosts Successful National Night Out

Hundreds gathered on August 4 at the Morton Grove Civic Center for the 11th annual National Night Out. Organized by the Morton Grove Police Department, the event celebrates the national initiative to foster strong ties between police and the community. Police Chief Mike Weitzel greeted residents, including Charlie Krishna.

Chief Weitzel highlighted the evolution of National Night Out from its 1980s inception to a nationwide event held every first Tuesday of August. It offers a relaxed environment for residents to meet police and firefighters, contrasting the typically high-stress scenarios when help is needed. This year’s event was free and featured activities such as kids’ games, live music, food, and safety demonstrations.

Community Liaison Officers Justin Jurasz and Sean Lang managed the event. Jurasz emphasized its role in strengthening bonds among residents and with first responders. Information tables from donors and local entities, like the Library and Park District, enriched the event. Various organizations, including the Cub Scouts and CIT Illinois Therapy K9, participated.

Educational outreach was a key aspect, featuring representatives from the Glenview Public Safety Dispatch Center, Animal Control Officer Kristin Smith, and police demonstrations on drone applications. The fire department offered a hands-on hose demonstration for children.

Among the attendees were Mayor Janine Witko, Trustees Connie Travis and Rita Minx, and Village Clerk Eileen Scanlon Harford. A representative from Commissioner Josina Morita’s office, along with Chiefs Mike Weitzel and Dennis Kennedy, also attended.

Mayor Witko remarked that National Night Out reflects the community Morton Grove aspires to be continually. Chief Weitzel noted that the event’s success relies on volunteers and community partnerships. Officer Lang appreciated seeing residents in a more positive setting, reaffirming police as community members too.
