The NFL witnessed a truly impactful trade on Monday as the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams agreed to a deal involving legendary pass rusher Myles Garrett. Garrett will move to the Rams in exchange for Pro Bowl pass rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-rounder, and additional assets.
Garrett’s Record and Legacy
Myles Garrett is a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He holds the NFL record for the most sacks in a single season, with 23 sacks in 2025. Garrett’s career also includes multiple seasons with 14 or more sacks, making him the all-time sack leader for the Browns with 123.5. He achieved All-Pro status five times, securing his place among the most dominant edge rushers in NFL history.
Trade Negotiations
Browns general manager Andrew Berry stated, “We are in discussions of a potential transaction including [Garrett]. We’ll have a lot more to say about it once it is final.” The deal was finalized shortly after these comments, emphasizing the rapid pace of negotiations.
The agreement could only fall through if the players involved do not report to their new teams or fail their physicals. These are the same circumstances that affected Maxx Crosby’s earlier trade to the Baltimore Ravens.
Rams’ Ambitious Offseason
The Rams are aiming for a Super Bowl run in 2026. They recently acquired Pro Bowl cornerback Trent McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs and added cornerback Jaylen Watson in free agency. Their drafting of quarterback Ty Simpson in the first round boosts their future prospects, especially with veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford nearing the end of his career.
Jared Verse’s Rising Career
Jared Verse, entering his third NFL season at 25, has already made a significant impact. As a rookie in 2024, he earned the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year title with 66 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and 77 pressures. His performance continued to improve in 2025, earning him another Pro Bowl selection and making him one of the most effective pass rushers, with 100 quarterback pressures that season.
This trade positions the Browns with two first-round picks in the 2027 draft, a year they highly prioritize due to the predicted talent pool. The Rams, however, are focusing on immediate success with Super Bowl ambitions.
