The Indiana Fever faced a surprising defeat at home against the Washington Mystics on Sunday. Despite the combined efforts of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, who contributed over half of Indiana’s points, the team lost 93-77. Clark delivered 25 points, making 6 out of 10 field goals and was perfect on 10 attempts from the free-throw line. Mitchell, known for her shooting, scored 22 points from 8 of 20 attempts.
During the first quarter, Indiana was outperformed 34-19. The following quarter saw the Fever adding just 11 points, reflecting their shooting struggle that day. Clark spoke to reporters, explaining Indiana’s downfall, emphasizing that the team typically leads the league in scoring.
I think when you give a team that much confidence early in the game, you’re just digging yourself a huge hole, and a hole we could never climb out of,she stated during her postgame session.
According to Clark, their execution was sloppy, blaming poor defense while acknowledging the Mystics’ excellent performance. It was frustrating,
she admitted, yet she reflected on the unpredictable nature of basketball. We shot the ball probably as poorly as we’ve shot it all year long,
she noted.
Indiana had a shooting rate of 36.6%, much lower than Washington’s 56.9%. This outcome might make Washington a formidable opponent among the eight playoff contenders, which include Indiana. The Fever displayed impressive free-throw accuracy, making 90.5% of their attempts, yet their inability to consistently score field goals proved costly.
With a few regular-season games remaining, playoff matchups are not finalized. Indiana hopes to avoid facing the Mystics in a series. However, this defeat might be an outlier for Indiana, who average a league-best 96.7 points per game. This also sets a challenge for the Minnesota Lynx, who face Indiana next on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. ET.
