Natural Compound in Berries Shows Potential for Fat Reduction in Muscle Cells

3 weeks ago 0

New research from Japan suggests that a natural compound, pterostilbene, found in blueberries and grapes, may help muscle cells break down stored fat. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that this compound effectively reduced fat accumulation in cultured mouse muscle cells.

Understanding Pterostilbene

Pterostilbene is an antioxidant naturally found in blueberries, grapes, and other berries. Although previous studies linked it to various metabolic advantages, its effects on skeletal muscle were not well understood.

Research Findings

‘Our findings establish a scientific framework for developing functional foods and nutritional supplements that target muscle fat metabolism,’ said Takakazu Mitani, lead researcher and associate professor at Shinshu University.

The research, published in Food Bioscience on September 1, revealed that pterostilbene reduces abnormal fat buildup in cells by promoting the breakdown of stored fats. This process is crucial as excessive fat within muscle cells can disrupt glucose and fatty acid utilization, potentially leading to insulin resistance. The study found that pterostilbene preserved a protein called PPAR-delta, which is important for regulating fat processing in cells.

Implications for Future Research

This study lays the groundwork for identifying other natural compounds that could enhance fat metabolism in muscle tissue. However, researchers emphasized the need for additional studies in humans and animals to determine if these effects can extend beyond laboratory conditions. Animal models allow for controlled exploration of specific mechanisms, but human metabolism is significantly more complex.

Registered dietitian Johannah Katz pointed out potential challenges in translating these findings to humans. In human systems, pterostilbene must be digested, absorbed, metabolized, circulated, and reach muscle tissue at an effective dose.

Real-World Considerations

Despite promising results in the lab, Katz cautioned that consuming blueberries or pterostilbene supplements may not directly lead to fat loss in humans. The study underscores the nutritional value of blueberries and grapes, yet further investigation is necessary to understand their impact on human muscle.
