NCAA Investigates University of Cincinnati Over Alleged Gambling Knowledge

Brendan Sorsby won’t be playing in college or professional football in 2026. However, his situation may lead to scrutiny for a college program. During a recent interview with ‘105.3 The Fan’ in Dallas, Sorsby’s agent, Ron Slavin, accused the University of Cincinnati of knowing about Sorsby’s gambling addiction and failing to take action.

Slavin stated, “Nobody knew when he was in the portal that this was happening. … If anybody should be questioned or catching heat, it should be Cincinnati because they knew for two years and never said anything or didn’t do anything about it. That’s the part of the story that gets lost.”

According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, Slavin’s claims have caught the NCAA’s attention, prompting an investigation into the University of Cincinnati. Dellenger reported, “The NCAA has sent a letter of inquiry to the University of Cincinnati related to Sorsby’s time at the school, those with knowledge tell Yahoo Sports.” He noted that such inquiries are common and don’t necessarily indicate wrongdoing but usually mark the beginning of an investigation into potential violations.

This inquiry serves as an exploratory measure by the NCAA. If evidence surfaces that Cincinnati knew about Sorsby’s gambling activities, validating Slavin’s accusations, the university may face penalties, such as fines, forfeited wins, and scholarship losses.

In response to the allegations, Cincinnati quickly issued a statement denying knowledge of Sorsby’s gambling during his time with the team. The statement emphasized, “All of our student-athletes receive extensive gambling education multiple times throughout the year, and we would never knowingly play an athlete who violated NCAA sports wagering regulations. If we ever became aware of impermissible wagering, we would report to the NCAA and comply with sanctions.”
