New Advisory Update for Americans Traveling to Brazil

1 month ago 0

Americans planning trips to Brazil should heed several cautions issued by U.S. officials regarding safety risks. On August 31, the State Department reiterated its Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution advisory for Brazil, highlighting concerns primarily related to crime and kidnapping. Though the advisory level remains the same, officials stress the importance of increased vigilance.

Violent crime in Brazil is prevalent in urban areas at all hours, including murder, armed robbery, and carjacking. Travelers are particularly warned about criminals targeting foreigners through dating apps or bars, where they might be drugged and robbed.

“Assaults are common, with instances where sedatives or drugs are placed in drinks, especially in Rio de Janeiro,” the advisory states.

The State Department maintains a Level 4 Do Not Travel warning for certain regions, such as international borders, informal housing areas, and specific zones around Brasília’s capital. Visitors are advised to be extra cautious at night, especially in beaches, bars, and transportation hubs.

Kidnapping for ransom rarely involves U.S. citizens but is not unheard of. While Brazilians are predominantly targeted, foreigners remain at risk. The advisory mentions express kidnapping, where victims are coerced at gunpoint to make ATM withdrawals or bank transfers, predominantly via apps like Pix.

Travelers should be vigilant about their surroundings, refrain from displaying valuables, and exercise caution during nighttime excursions. It is wise to closely monitor drinks, decline food or beverages from strangers, and stay alert to potential online dating scams.

Additional cautions include being careful at major transportation centers or when using public transport, particularly buses, where robbery and assault risks increase.

The Brazil advisory aligns with other global alerts, such as advisories for Israel and Ecuador, urging Americans to reconsider travel plans due to rapidly changing security situations.
