Introduction to the New Pathway

Travelers can now walk or cycle between the United States and Canada using the Gordie Howe International Bridge’s new cross-border pathway. This toll-free option enables travelers to reach the neighboring country in under an hour. The bridge’s multi-use path became accessible on August 5, days after the bridge itself opened on July 27.

Bridge Specifications and Significance

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a cable-stayed structure that stretches 150 feet (46 meters) above the Detroit River, linking Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor in Ontario. It holds the title of the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America and ranks as the tenth longest worldwide.

The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) praised this pathway as an essential connection for both locals and tourists. Chuck Andary, the authority’s interim CEO and chief legal officer, highlighted the community’s involvement in its development. He attributed its realization to the support from the WDBA board, designers, engineers, and border agencies.

Purpose of the Gordie Howe International Bridge

The bridge was proposed to expand the capacity for trade between Detroit and Windsor, a crucial commercial corridor in North America. Before its construction began in 2018, trade traffic relied on the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. This new crossing not only enhances trade but also introduces a route for pedestrians and cyclists.

Political Controversy Surrounding the Opening

The bridge’s opening followed several months of political controversy. In February 2026, President Donald Trump threatened to prevent its opening unless the U.S. received compensation for perceived unfair treatment by Canada. He demanded fair treatment and respect via a post on Truth Social. Subsequently, Canadian officials canceled the planned joint ribbon-cutting ceremony after Trump applied additional tariffs on Canadian goods.

A spokesperson for Canadian Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson stated that amid the trade tensions, holding a celebratory event would be improper.

Using the New Pathway

The bridge offers a new means to cross the border. Cyclists can expect a one-way trip of about 20 minutes while pedestrians should allot around 45 minutes. These estimates exclude time for reaching the bridge entrances or completing border processing. Open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the pathway requires users to carry necessary travel documents for both countries. Initially, access is on a first-come, first-served basis, ensuring a safe experience. Travelers should consider off-peak times to enjoy a smoother trip.

Tourism and Community Impact

Andary emphasized that the pathway extends beyond mere transportation. It forms part of a binational trail network connecting communities and opening new avenues for recreation and tourism in the Windsor-Detroit region.

Heather Grondin, chief relations officer at the WDBA, noted strong interest from cycling groups, tourism bodies, and local residents. The project responds to public requests for a safe active-transportation connection. The route links trail networks and destinations in both cities, further tightening the bond between these neighboring communities.
