New Leadership Faces Challenges at CDC

35 minutes ago 0

Erica Schwartz, recently confirmed as the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), acknowledged ongoing challenges within the agency during her initial meeting with staff. Schwartz, stepping into an agency that experienced significant layoffs and a recent shooting at its Atlanta headquarters, seeks to improve morale.

Schwartz, who became the director after a year without official leadership, follows Susan Monarez, whose tenure was cut short. In a meeting, Schwartz noted the staff’s morale struggles and urged them to work with her through listening sessions to rebuild lost trust. She stated, “To build morale, I need to earn your trust and will do what is necessary to achieve that.”

A staff member expressed feelings of unease in asking questions, fearing reprimand. Schwartz acknowledged the psychological strain and apologized, emphasizing her commitment to address these issues.

Concerns about Schwartz handling vaccine policy arose after a federal judge disbanded the agency’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). An executive order from former President Trump aimed to alter the MMR vaccine and reduce childhood immunizations. Schwartz assured the staff that the CDC would have a say in implementing the order, intending to review it critically.

Schwartz stated, “We will analyze the executive order, determine what makes sense, and prepare to advise ACIP when it is reassembled.”
