Setbacks for Progressive Candidates in Illinois Primaries

1 hour ago 0

Progressive candidates experienced significant setbacks in the Illinois Democratic primaries. Some received support from high-profile figures including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and “The Squad”, but still faced considerable defeats. Fox News contributor Joe Concha highlighted that moderate candidates, such as Mayor Daniel Biss and former Congresswoman Melissa Bean, achieved wins in Illinois House districts 09, 08, and 02.

Progressive state senator and assistant majority leader Aisha Wahab triumphed over Melissa Hernandez, a moderate in public transit, during a special election to fill the seat of the disgraced Rep. Eric Swalwell. This race marked another clash between the Democratic establishment and its progressive faction. Wahab, backed by endorsements from California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, and labor leader Dolores Huerta, secured significant support, while Hernandez benefited from financial backing by super PACs and endorsements from local figures.

Initially, progressive Democrats achieved successes in states like New York, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and DC. Their performance waned, however, in Michigan’s Senate and Wisconsin’s gubernatorial primaries. Wahab was a frontrunner, garnering 42.8% of the vote compared to Hernandez’s 16.8% during the special primary.

“Dems’ left-center battle intensifies as Schumer takes another hit; split decision for Trump.”

In California, “jungle primaries” allow the top two candidates, regardless of party, to advance. Wahab and Hernandez, both Democrats, claimed the top places, excluding Republicans from contention in a district easily won by Harris during the 2024 presidential election. The special election decided who would complete the remaining two months of Swalwell’s term, with another contest anticipated in November for a full two-year congressional term.

Although the current victory is temporary, incumbents often have an electoral edge. The upcoming general election will occur under newly redesigned district boundaries due to California’s updated congressional map.

Some Democrats believe that the recent faltering of progressive candidates suggests a plateau in the party’s socialist movement. Others, however, note the ongoing appeal of socialist politicians and policies among young voters.

Hernandez criticized Wahab for ethical issues during her state service, while Wahab depicted Hernandez as benefiting from conservative and pro-Israel funding, questioning her progressive stance. Hernandez alleged Wahab breached campaign finance laws by channeling $60,000 through the Alameda County Democratic Party. In turn, Wahab accused Hernandez of financial associations with pro-Israel entities.

The Israeli-Palestinian issue remains a contentious point in the Democratic Party, with progressives striving to replace Democrats supportive of Israel.
