New York Times Faces Scrutiny Over Columnist’s Conduct

2 weeks ago 0

The New York Times is evaluating the work of columnist Nicholas Kristof for potential clarifications regarding nondisclosure of political campaign donations linked to subjects in his articles. Kristof, who left the Times in 2021 to run for governor of Oregon but returned in 2022 due to residency issues, faces questions over his impartiality.

Semafor reported instances where Kristof wrote favorably about significant donors like Bill Gates without disclosing their campaign contributions. Gates and his former wife allegedly contributed $100,000 to Kristof’s campaign. Additional undisclosed connections involved McKinsey Global Managing Partner Bob Sternfels and late Harvard professor Joseph Nye.

The New York Times is assessing Kristof’s work to ensure transparency for readers.

The newspaper, known for strict regulations on political activities by its journalists, announced an investigation following inquiries from Semafor. A spokesperson confirmed that articles mentioning Kristof’s political donors require clearer disclosures.

Kristof has been vocal about issues concerning the late Jeffrey Epstein, questioning figures like former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak about ties to Epstein. Despite writing extensively about Gates’ philanthropic efforts and initiatives, Kristof’s articles omitted any mention of Gates’ known interactions with Epstein or his donation to Kristof’s campaign. Gates maintains he never witnessed or pursued a relationship with Epstein.

Last month, Kristof authored a controversial opinion piece alleging abuses by Israelis against Palestinian detainees, fueling backlash. The article cited accusations, including that police dogs were used against prisoners, provoking criticism from the Israeli government and accusations of bias. The Times defended the piece as being supported by independent studies and denied plans for retraction.

This situation adds to ongoing discussions about editorial practices and transparency within major media organizations.
