Prior to the incident, there were already discussions about whether CBS would retain him as the lead NFL analyst, especially with the upcoming Super Bowl in 2028.

Romo’s performance has faced criticism over the past three years. Many point to his apparent lack of preparation, playful mannerisms, and strained conversations with Jim Nantz. A recent report from Puck News suggests that his arrest might hasten his departure, indicating that industry insiders believe Romo may not return to CBS.

CBS could potentially use a morals clause to terminate Romo due to the arrest video. However, Romo’s contract guarantees him $18 million annually through 2030, suggesting his legal team would likely contest any contract termination attempt. Despite this, CBS isn’t bound to air him.

If Romo exits, his vacated role would be a major opportunity in sports media. J.J. Watt, who had a promising run in broadcasting, will replace Romo this season. If Watt collaborates effectively with Jim Nantz, CBS might choose to make his role permanent.

Aikman, considered one of the best commentators, might demand around $25 million annually to switch from ESPN. Olsen, currently Fox’s second choice, has the skills to be a top analyst. Herbstreit, known for college football, is less likely due to CBS’s limited college sports lineup.
