NFL Players Prefer Grass Over Turf Amid Safety Concerns

With the conclusion of the World Cup, many NFL players have voiced a preference for playing on grass rather than artificial turf. This discussion has gained traction as seven out of 11 World Cup venues in the United States, which are also NFL stadiums, used artificial turf. FIFA, however, mandates games be held on grass.

The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) has humorously acknowledged the situation, suggesting that the ‘green carpet’ was rolled out for soccer players. A social media campaign with the hashtag ‘#WorthTheCost’ has been initiated by players, emphasizing the importance of safety.

Saquon Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles shared his thoughts on the matter. He remarked that it is difficult to argue against having grass fields in the NFL if it was done for the World Cup.

Barkley admitted he needs more information on injury statistics between grass and turf. Still, he personally favors grass fields, echoing the sentiment of many players. Studies comparing these surfaces may influence future preferences.

While Barkley has suffered injuries on grass, he notes that some factors are beyond control. His outstanding 2,000-yard season occurred on a grass field with the Eagles, who play their home games on this surface.

Currently, half of the NFL stadiums use turf. Despite this, 92% of players reportedly prefer grass, according to NFLPA Executive Director Lloyd Howell. Turf is considered less costly and easier to maintain as stadiums host various events all year.

In response to player preferences, it was decided that by the 2026 season, all NFL teams will have access to a library of approved field standards. New fields must comply immediately, and all existing fields must meet the standards within two years.

Despite setting standards for both grass and artificial turf fields, there is no mandate for natural grass fields in the NFL. Dr. Allen Sills, the league’s chief medical officer, stated there are no significant differences in injuries or concussion rates linked to the type of playing surface.
