Sophie Cunningham Sparks Debate Over Women’s Sports

Sophie Cunningham’s stance on the protection of women’s sports has become a contentious issue across the WNBA. The controversy followed her supporters to Minnesota, where protests unfolded on Sunday.

Women’s sports advocates gathered peacefully outside Target Center before the Indiana Fever faced the Minnesota Lynx. They wore XX-XY Athletics shirts and held signs with messages like “Pro-Women, Not Anti-Trans” and “Trust the Science.”

This rally marked the third organized event supporting Cunningham since she publicly stated young female athletes “shouldn’t have to compete against biological men.”

Nearby, trans activists were less inclined toward peaceful discourse. Video footage shows counterprotesters using megaphones to shout, hurling slurs, and attempting to snatch XX-XY shirts from Cunningham’s supporters. One incident involved a man holding a fan with a derogatory term over the heads of the women.

A physical confrontation occurred when an activist engaged aggressively with a supporter, prompting security intervention.

The events in Minnesota mirrored similar scenes that occurred during Fever games in Seattle and Portland. In Seattle, an incident involved teenage girls being approached courtside by Storm minority owner Celeste Keaton, who allegedly used offensive language, leaving one in tears.

The WNBA reacted by fining the Storm and suspending Keaton from attending the next five home games.

In Portland, supporters rallied outside the Moda Center. Trans activists interrupted speakers, used offensive language towards reporters, and confronted attendees. Inside, Cunningham faced boos whenever she entered the game or touched the ball.

Before the Portland game, Cunningham affirmed her resolve. “I’m here to play basketball, but I’m also here to be me,” she stated. “I’m not going to hide or dim my light because others might disagree.”
