Nicolas Cage recently spoke about turning down roles in two major franchises for projects that aligned better with his personal and professional goals. In an interview with Complex News, the 62-year-old actor discussed how he prioritized meaningful roles over mainstream success.
Cage recounted, “Jim Carrey wanted me to do ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ but I chose ‘Leaving Las Vegas,’ and I also turned down the Green Goblin role in ‘Spider-Man’ for ‘Adaptation.'” Cage believed these choices offered more depth for his acting career.
Ultimately, Jeff Daniels played Harry Dunne in “Dumb and Dumber,” while Willem Dafoe took on the role of the Green Goblin in “Spider-Man.” Dafoe reprised his role in multiple sequels, demonstrating the opportunities Cage chose to pass.
By opting for roles in “Leaving Las Vegas” and “Adaptation,” Cage focused on projects that earned him critical acclaim. Playing an alcoholic screenwriter in “Leaving Las Vegas” won him both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. His portrayal of twin brothers in “Adaptation” earned additional Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.
Cage reflected, “To play twins was daunting. That script spoke to me, and I made the right choice.” He explained that had those franchises not been options, he still would have pursued these roles due to their significant impact on his career.
While discussing his preparation for an upcoming film, “The Surfer,” Cage described the physical challenges he faced during surfing. “I got pounded in the rip tide. I have a young kid now, and I’m unsure if I want to continue such activities.” Cage’s priorities have often included his role as a father. He has three children: Weston with Christina Fulton, Kal-El with Alice Kim, and August Francesca with Riko Shibata.
Cage shared with People in 2022 how family influenced his career decisions. He turned down roles in “Lord of the Rings” and “The Matrix” due to long filming commitments that would have separated him from his son, Weston. “Being with my children has always come first,” Cage emphasized.
