Former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper is currently leading Republican Michael Whatley by 9 percentage points, with 53 percent compared to 44 percent. Democratic Enthusiasm

Democratic voters display higher enthusiasm for the upcoming elections. The poll shows 51 percent of Democrats are “extremely interested” in the election, compared to 42 percent of Republicans. Additionally, 58 percent of Democrats report being extremely motivated to vote, while only 50 percent of Republicans say the same. Such enthusiasm might be a decisive factor on Election Day.

Among the most interested voters, Cooper leads by 15 points, indicating a strong enthusiasm gap that could impact the election outcome.

Voter Motivation and Trends

For voters extremely motivated to vote, Cooper shows a commanding 13-point advantage, 55 percent to 42 percent. Among those certain to vote, Cooper maintains a 9-point lead. These numbers are crucial as highly engaged voters are usually the ones who turn out on Election Day.

Republican pollster Daron Shaw explains, “Cooper’s edge relies on near-total Democratic support and strong numbers from independents. Whatley needs to improve his appeal to non-MAGA Republicans and less partisan voters.”

The Importance of Independents

The poll shows Cooper leading among independents by a wide margin of 60 to 34 percent. Favorability ratings also favor Cooper, who has a 54 percent favorability compared to Whatley’s 40 percent. Cooper’s unfavorability is 44 percent, slightly lower than Whatley’s 46 percent.

North Carolina’s Senate race is vital for both parties, as control of the U.S. Senate could hinge on the outcome. Currently, Republicans hold a 53-45 majority. Other polls support Cooper’s lead. A Public Policy Polling survey in July showed Cooper ahead by 4 percentage points over Whatley, with a 3.6 percent margin of error. Meanwhile, a New York Times/Siena University poll indicated a 7-point lead for Cooper. Both polls suggest Cooper’s continued dominance.

The Cook Political Report has categorized the race as “lean Democrat,” reflecting the strengthened position of Cooper as the election nears.
