Northbrook is experiencing a significant transformation in its law enforcement with a new police station being developed and a change in leadership. Marc Fainman, with over 20 years in the department, is set to take on the role of chief of police, succeeding John Ustich. Ustich retired in July after dedicating 30 years to service.
Fainman’s swearing-in occurred on August 25 during the village’s Board meeting. His roots in the community run deep, having graduated from Glenbrook North High School and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Although UIUC did not offer a criminology program, he pursued sociology, which paved his way into law enforcement.
Initially, Fainman’s interest in policing was sparked by popular television shows, prompting him to tailor his studies toward the field. An internship with the Champaign Police Department further cemented his desire to solve problems and serve the community.
After an intensive hiring process, Fainman joined the Northbrook police team. He expresses pride in belonging to such a talented department, especially within his hometown. He values the learning opportunities from his coworkers and considers serving Northbrook as a privilege.
Fainman has been instrumental in initiating several critical programs. These include the implementation of a body-worn camera program and modernizing officer training. His leadership also facilitated organizational studies to enhance police procedures.
As chief, Fainman is focused on completing projects he initiated as deputy chief. These projects aim to expand wellness resources for officers and their families. He is also managing the construction of the new police station.
The new station aims to meet modern policing demands, incorporating expanded resources like counseling services. It is expected to be ready in three to five years, subject to construction progress and budget adjustments.
Fainman is passionate about his new role. He emphasizes his dedication to problem-solving and community service. He aims to listen to feedback from officers and residents to determine necessary modernizations. His deep knowledge of the community and experience in law enforcement puts him in a strong position to lead the department forward.
