An investigation requested by the University of Notre Dame has revealed shortcomings in their response to sexual misconduct allegations. The report, conducted by law firm Debevoise & Plimpton, accused the university of inaction against Rev. Thomas King, who was accused of misconduct while serving as a dorm rector and at Holy Cross College.
The investigation uncovered that Rev. King engaged in a ‘weighing scheme’ during the 1980s and 1990s. He claimed concern for students’ health, requiring them to undress for weighing in a locker room. The report stated that multiple individuals experienced inappropriate touching or assault by Rev. King at both Notre Dame and Holy Cross College.
The 25-page report criticized Notre Dame for insufficient response to the allegations. Witnesses reported complaints against Rev. King dating back to the 1990s. The report draws attention to similar past allegations involving other priests at the university.
Interviews with staff from departments that allegedly received complaints revealed no recollection of such reports. Additionally, some employees misunderstood the implications of the ‘weighing’ incidents.
