New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani accused the federal government of harming immigrant communities, which he described as vital to the city. Speaking on Monday, he announced a lawsuit with five other sanctuary jurisdictions against the Trump administration’s new immigration rule.
Mamdani criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for invading homes, workplaces, and schools, targeting those seeking refuge and opportunity. He called these actions a threat to both civic values and community wellbeing.
“The federal government has waged a campaign of violence and terror,” Mamdani stated. “These actions are an assault on our civic fabric, on our shared values.”
Alongside New York City Attorney General Letitia James, Mamdani aims to prevent the administration from denying immigrants over welfare status. The mayor highlighted the contributions of immigrants to infrastructure and public services, noting their role in securing labor rights.
A coalition of sanctuary cities, including Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Santa Clara County, and King County, joins New York City in opposing the stricter public charge rule changes. These changes, introduced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in July, broaden the scope of benefits considered detrimental to an immigrant’s application.
Under Biden’s 2022 guidelines, immigration officers focused only on cash assistance and dependency. The revised rule now includes noncash benefits like Medicaid and housing vouchers. USCIS claims the rule ensures noncitizens remain self-sufficient.
Mamdani argued the changes pose a significant threat, causing families to avoid necessary services out of fear, even those with U.S. citizen children.
“This is an undisguised effort to strip New Yorkers of the services they rely on,” he stated. Families have started to avoid programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and affordable housing, fearing repercussions on their immigration status.
A USCIS spokesperson justified the move as essential for taxpayer protection. The Trump administration asserts the rule safeguards Americans’ financial interests.
