Olivia Newton-John faced deep emotional turmoil due to the mysterious disappearance of her former partner, Patrick McDermott. McDermott vanished during a 2005 fishing trip off the California coast, leaving questions that lingered through Newton-John’s life.

Matthew Hild’s biography, “A Little More Love,” delves into the impact McDermott’s disappearance had on Newton-John, known for her iconic role as Sandy in “Grease.” The biography reveals that Newton-John believed that McDermott might have drowned, although rumors persisted about him possibly being alive in Mexico.

“It’s still an unsolved mystery,” Hild told Fox News Digital.

The book provides insights into Newton-John’s struggle with uncertainty. McDermott’s possessions were found on the fishing vessel “Freedom,” and his car remained at San Pedro’s 22nd Street Marina, raising more questions about his fate. Despite hiring security expert Gavin de Becker to investigate, no concrete evidence was found.

Reports pointed to McDermott’s financial troubles, including bankruptcy filings and child support debts, fueling speculation. Friends, however, described him as a devoted father, contradicting the idea of him voluntarily disappearing.

Tabloids and investigators speculated McDermott was living under an assumed identity in Mexico, but these claims lacked evidence. Newton-John publicly expressed hope for his safety, making appeals for any information.

Despite the turbulence, Newton-John remained close to McDermott’s family, particularly his son and ex-wife, Yvette Nipar. Hild highlights Newton-John’s protective nature towards them, wanting to shield them from the media scrutiny.

The U.S. Coast Guard eventually closed its investigation, suggesting McDermott might have been lost at sea, but Newton-John continued to question these conclusions.

Newton-John’s resilience shines through in her decision to refocus on her career and personal passions. Dance classes offered her solace, allowing her a reprieve from her emotional burden.

Newton-John moved forward and found happiness again with John Easterling, whom she married in 2008. They were together until her passing in 2022.
