The Green Bay Packers faced the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday during Week 1 of the NFL season. This marked their first significant game since the disappointing loss to the Chicago Bears, where they were outscored 25-6 in the fourth quarter, ultimately losing 31-27 in the Wild-Card Round back in January.
Following their playoff exit, the Packers extended contracts for head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst. However, Sunday’s game was challenging as the Packers initially led 22-10 in the third quarter. The Vikings, with backup quarterback Carson Wentz at the helm, managed to score the final 29 points, defeating the Packers 39-22. A crowd of 66,940 witnessed this at U.S. Bank Stadium.
The Packers are currently enduring a six-game losing streak. In this period, they squandered double-digit leads twice against the Bears, once against the Denver Broncos, and most recently against the Vikings.
Some fans are understandably frustrated with the Packers’ recent performances. If the trend continues, changes may be inevitable. Steve “Homer” True, speaking on ESPN Madison, suggested the Packers should consider dismissing LaFleur despite his newly signed contract extension. True commented, “You are making a coach something he’s not. He’s capable of blowing the game at any time, regardless of the lead. How you can assume the game is over at any point, given his ability as a coach and the games that you’ve seen… is amazing to me. You can never take a game for granted with him as a coach… They should let him go tonight.”
It remains early to decide on LaFleur’s fate before Week 2. Green Bay needs to address issues early this season. Improvement is anticipated, particularly with Micah Parsons returning from an ACL injury and Josh Jacobs potentially rejoining from the commissioner exempt list.
