Padded Bras in Cycling: Controversy at Tour de France Femmes

Accusations have emerged in the cycling community regarding the use of padded bras for an aerodynamic advantage. As the Tour de France Femmes unfolds across Switzerland and France, these claims have stirred significant controversy. The debate gained momentum following a record-breaking solo breakaway in the race’s third stage, although there is no evidence connecting padded bras to this achievement.

Reports suggest that female cyclists from various WorldTeams might be falsely enhancing their breast size with padding during time trials. According to aerodynamic expert Bert Blocken from Heriot-Watt University and LUT, a rounder chest can reduce aerodynamic drag through a concept known as chest fairing. This method alters airflow around the body, decreasing air resistance in critical areas, thus potentially offering an advantage.

“A Chest Fairing helps reduce overpressure on the thighs, resulting in less air resistance,” explained Professor Blocken.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) prohibits using padded bras to modify a rider’s shape. Any objects placed on the chest or clothing designed to change body shape contravene these regulations. Despite this, some teams believe padded bras are being utilized to unfairly gain seconds in races.

The controversy has led to suggestions for measures to curb this practice. Teams propose that female jurors check riders in privacy after time trials, ensuring no prohibited padding is used. This solution aims to address the current concerns but raises questions about future tactics riders might employ.
