Paraguay Falls to France in Heated World Cup Match

1 hour ago 0

During the 2026 World Cup’s last match held in Philadelphia, Paraguay faced a challenging encounter against France. The South American team employed a physical style of play, reminiscent of the tactics seen at the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles home games at Lincoln Financial Field. Paraguay’s strategy did not sit well with France’s players or fans.

France managed to secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16. French midfielder Manu Koné expressed his surprise at the physical intensity of the game. “I had never played a match like this, with so many hits,” Koné mentioned, noting the rough challenges and shoves experienced during the game.

Paraguay appeared to focus on disrupting France’s star forward, Kylian Mbappé. Mbappé converted a penalty in the 70th minute of the game. However, the physical confrontations did not cease. Andrés Cubas targeted Mbappé in the offensive third, which led to an on-field commotion in the 35th minute. Additionally, Matias Galarza made contact with Mbappé off the ball, and Juan José Cáceres later kicked the forward in the shin.

Remarkably, none of these incidents resulted in yellow cards against Paraguay. Instead, France was issued three yellow cards, while Paraguay received one for dissent after the match had ended. Mbappé commented on the physicality, stating, “We knew what kind of match it was going to be… Even at that kind of game, we were better than them.”

After the match, tempers flared as players gathered near the center circle. Paraguay’s goalkeeper, Orlando Gill, threw a ball at Mbappé. Gill admitted, “I tried to shake his hand, but since he didn’t pay me any attention, I lost my temper.” Paraguay’s head coach maintained that their intention was to play a hard game from the start.

France’s coach, Didier Deschamps, criticized Paraguay’s tactics. “Each team played the way they want,” Deschamps said. “But there were insults from the other bench that I could do without.” France’s William Saliba summarized the experience by stating, “We fought a battle. We won the battle.”
