Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, secured a contract extension that runs into the next decade. This agreement not only reinforces his commitment to the team but also boosts his total compensation over $500 million. A source familiar with the contract details confirmed this.
Originally, Mahomes signed a landmark 10-year, $450 million deal in 2020. This new extension now ties him to the Chiefs through the 2033 season. The total package can reach $522.25 million with incentives.
“Over the last decade, Patrick has become one of the most iconic sports figures,” stated Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt, acknowledging Mahomes’ impact on the team and city.
The Chiefs and Mahomes often adjust his contract, allowing the team flexibility to maintain a competitive squad. The latest extension includes a significant pay raise. Mahomes will now average $63.1 million annually, surpassing other top quarterbacks like Dak Prescott and Joe Burrow.
Despite undergoing surgery last December due to a knee injury, Mahomes dedicated the offseason to rehabilitation in Kansas City. Chiefs coach Andy Reid observed his progress, emphasizing the importance of maintaining his rhythm with the team’s receivers.
Mahomes targets Week 1 of the coming season for his full return. The Chiefs open their regular season against the Denver Broncos on September 14 at Arrowhead Stadium. Mahomes has expressed his determination to be prepared for this marquee matchup.
Since taking the role of starting quarterback in 2018, Mahomes has achieved impressive milestones. He has thrown for nearly 36,000 yards and won three Super Bowls, appearing in five championship games. Mahomes aims to continue this legacy, keeping his focus on being ready for the upcoming season.
