Patrick Mahomes Ready for Return After Major Surgery

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently made waves with a tweet featuring his signature clock emoji. For many, this signals that Mahomes is ready to take on any critics as he makes his comeback. Shortly after his tweet, Mahomes spoke to Kansas City media, announcing that he has been fully cleared to participate in training camp.

The clearance comes just seven months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL. The two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion mentioned that he received the go-ahead from Dr. Dan Cooper earlier in the week.

This is just another checkpoint on the schedule. You have to continue to work. It’s not like it’s over, and I’m just gonna be able to play a game tomorrow. You gotta continue to work and get better and better and go throughout practice and prove to the coaches, prove to the doctors, and everybody that I’m the same quarterback I was before, if not better.

When asked how he believes he has improved post-injury, Mahomes shared a statement that will likely concern the rest of the NFL: I feel stronger than I’ve ever felt. He emphasized the importance of mastering movement within the pocket, quick reactions, and other critical abilities. Mahomes acknowledged that he wasn’t playing his best football before the injury and is determined to enhance his skills and allow teammates to make plays.

While he intends to resume his pre-injury activities, Mahomes plans to reduce his running from last season. The Chiefs’ signing of Kenneth Walker III, a former Seattle Seahawks running back and reigning Super Bowl MVP, lessens the need for Mahomes to lead in rushing. In Mahomes’ eight years as Chiefs QB1, he has not had the benefit of a 1,000-yard rusher.

Signing Walker and reuniting with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy reflects the Chiefs’ offseason focus on creating an offense less reliant on Mahomes’ improvisational skills. Still, fans expect to see Mahomes deliver magical moments on the field. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, it’s poised to be pivotal, marking a critical point for the Chiefs’ dynasty. Last season, the team ended with a 6-11 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
