Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is facing a significant period of absence due to blood clots in his lungs, prompting serious concerns about his treatment. Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, and the team announced that his prognosis is very good, with expectations of a full recovery. Despite the seriousness of the condition, which can be life-threatening, the Eagles indicate Hurts might miss the remainder of the season.
Hurts was cleared to play in London a week prior, despite having a blood clot in his leg. He performed well, throwing for 222 yards and a touchdown, though the Eagles lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 19-17. Prior to the game, he was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in his left calf, requiring him to stay awake overnight for monitoring. He played after resting briefly following his hospital release.
The diagnosis has since worsened, revealing deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli with blood clots in his left leg and lungs, according to the team and his agent. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) involves a clot forming in deep veins, usually in the lower extremities, while pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a clot travels to the lungs, posing serious risks.
Dr. Jon LaPook stated, “You have a clot in your leg. It can travel up the veins to your heart, then move to your lungs and block the blood vessels, leading to serious pulmonary emboli.”
Whether the condition is career-ending is uncertain. The typical treatment involves blood thinners for three months, followed by close monitoring to assess progress. LaPook added that Hurts’ blood would likely be tested for clotting risk factors.
The diagnosis has led to criticism towards the Eagles’ medical staff. Coach Nick Sirianni expressed trust in the team’s medical experts, though fans have raised concerns about his London play and the subsequent flight’s impact on his condition.
Flying might have exacerbated the issue. Dr. LaPook explained that dehydration and limited movement during flights can affect blood circulation. Although Hurts was cleared to play, the flights might have increased his clot risk.
Organizations differ on flying post-DVT, generally advising longer waits than Hurts had. According to the CDC, extended immobility is a risk for VTE during travel. The International Air Transport Association and British Thoracic Society recommend waiting days after DVT diagnosis before flying.
Hurts has undergone thorough evaluations with specialists. The team plans to observe the condition’s improvement over three months with blood thinners. Hurts is expected to return to football activities post-recovery and remain active and conditioned during his absence, with hopes for no lasting effects.
“We are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery,” the Eagles said.
