Two Philadelphia police officers were shot multiple times early Saturday morning and subsequently taken to hospitals, according to officials. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on the 100 block of North 52nd Street in West Philadelphia.

Authorities reported that officers responded to a call about a man with a gun on a house porch. Upon arrival, they faced heavy gunfire, as stated by Commissioner Kevin Bethel.

Both officers required surgery at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Their conditions remain undisclosed. Commissioner Bethel identified one officer as a 40-year-old father of two, who suffered three gunshot wounds. The second officer, aged 33 and a father of five, was shot twelve times.

Following the initial shots, additional officers were summoned to the scene. The suspect continued to fire at them several times. Eventually, police apprehended the suspect after removing him from a tree. Officers confiscated three firearms from the location, including two handguns and a shotgun. One of the handguns was confirmed by Bethel to belong to one of the injured officers.

“I want to be very clear, I am grateful for their service and the reason is for nights like tonight. We think of them as law enforcement officers, but I see mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters,” Mayor Cherelle Parker expressed.

Mayor Parker reminded the public of the risks police face daily and urged prayers for the officers’ recovery. The circumstances leading to the shooting continue to be investigated. Updates will follow as new information becomes available.
