Philadelphia police have released surveillance footage of two suspects responsible for the murder of Billy Schmidt, a Pennsylvania State University student. Schmidt was killed during an armed robbery while returning home from an NBA Finals watch party.
The incident occurred on Saturday at about 1:30 a.m., when Schmidt was found with a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after at 1:47 a.m.
The Philadelphia Police Department provided descriptions of the suspects captured in the surveillance video. The shooter is identified as a Black male, approximately 5’3″ to 5’5″, dressed entirely in black with a light gray camouflage mask. This individual was armed with a handgun.
The second suspect is described as 5’8″, with braids, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt from the “KONFUSED” brand, featuring three skulls and crossbones with jeweled halos.
Investigators believe Schmidt was robbed at about 1:30 a.m. Earlier surveillance video shows Schmidt pursuing the suspects, reportedly saying, “Give me my phone,” before a gunshot was heard as a phone was tossed to the ground.
“I found the phone on 19th. I called police after,” said Bill Schmidt, Billy’s father. He inadvertently touched the phone, which police are analyzing for DNA and fingerprints.
Anna Schmidt, Billy’s sister, expressed hope that the culprits would be captured and face life in jail. She emphasized the pain the family is experiencing, noting the senselessness of the unarmed robbery.
The Philadelphia Police Department invites anyone with information about the suspects to reach out via 215-686-3334/3335, offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
