PlayStation to Cease Physical Game Disc Releases by 2028

2 hours ago 0

PlayStation has announced plans to stop releasing physical discs for new games starting January 2028. This shift reflects what the company describes as a ‘natural direction’ to align with consumer trends. However, some fans have expressed frustration over this decision.

Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed that future games will only be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and other retailers. According to a blog post by the company, this move matches the way most users currently access and play games.

The announcement provoked backlash from parts of the gaming community. Comments on the blog labeled the decision as ‘really disappointing’ and ‘terrible’. One fan mentioned, ‘We literally own nothing now but licenses’, calling the change ‘horrible’.

This reaction mirrors what happened with last month’s pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6. Then, developer Rockstar stated that the physical edition would merely contain a code for a digital download.

What Has Sony Said

Sid Shuman, Senior Director for Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, explained the transition as part of a broader industry move from physical discs to digital formats.

‘This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,’ he stated.

Shuman expressed that this change allows Sony to align more closely with the predominant ways the community prefers to access and play games.

‘We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support,’ he added.

Further updates on this story are anticipated.
