Police Investigate Shooting at Wilmington Hospital

On Tuesday afternoon, police responded to reports of a shooting at ChristianaCare Hospital located in Wilmington, Delaware. The incident occurred within the hospital premises on the 500 block of West 14th Street, prompting the Wilmington Police Department to urge the public to steer clear of the area.

A dispatcher from the police department informed Newsweek that the scene and investigation remain ongoing. The hospital issued a statement confirming the lockdown of the campus and the diversion of the emergency department’s operations.

“We are collaborating closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of patients, caregivers, and visitors. This is an active police inquiry concerning a potential active shooter scenario,” the statement noted.

Shooting at Wilmington Hospital: Update

Initial news reports surfaced around 4:10 p.m. ET on Tuesday, though the details regarding potential injuries or suspects were scant by 4:50 p.m. ET. By around 4:30 p.m., numerous police officers, including some equipped in tactical gear, had assembled outside both the main entrance and emergency room of the hospital, as reported by the Delaware News Journal.

The Wilmington Police Department indicated that the shooting happened at the hospital located on the 500 block of West 14th Street, just northwest of central Wilmington. The hospital encompasses a 622,100-square-foot facility and provides 321 beds.

In a notable past event, then President-elect Joe Biden received his second COVID-19 vaccine at ChristianaCare in January 2021.

The hospital has confirmed that they are on lockdown as the investigation continues.

“We are actively gathering information and will share updates when new details are confirmed. Our focus remains on ensuring the safety and welfare of everyone on site, alongside maintaining patient care continuity,” the hospital stated to Newsweek.
