The incident occurred within the hospital premises on the 500 block of West 14th Street, prompting the Wilmington Police Department to urge the public to steer clear of the area.
A dispatcher from the police department informed Newsweek that the scene and investigation remain ongoing. The hospital issued a statement confirming the lockdown of the campus and the diversion of the emergency department’s operations.
“We are collaborating closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of patients, caregivers, and visitors. This is an active police inquiry concerning a potential active shooter scenario,” the statement noted.

Initial news reports surfaced around 4:10 p.m. ET on Tuesday, though the details regarding potential injuries or suspects were scant by 4:50 p.m. ET. By around 4:30 p.m., numerous police officers, including some equipped in tactical gear, had assembled outside both the main entrance and emergency room of the hospital, as reported by the Delaware News Journal.
