Political Newcomer N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas Seeks to Challenge GOP Stronghold in Oklahoma

1 month ago 0

A fresh face in politics has emerged victorious in Oklahoma, a state with a strong Republican tradition. N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas, a nurse making her first run for office, won the Democratic Senate nomination in a runoff race. She defeated Jim Priest, a lawyer and nonprofit executive. Thomas led the June primary, which featured five candidates competing for the nomination.

Oklahoma has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in over 30 years. The upcoming election poses a historical challenge. Thomas aims to disrupt this tradition with multiple policy proposals on her website. These include increasing teacher salaries, reinstating Roe v. Wade, and expanding the Affordable Care Act. Her primary focus in the early days of her Senate career, if elected, would be to impeach President Donald Trump.

In an interview with KOSU, Thomas outlined her approach to working with Republican nominee Rep. Kevin Hern. Hern is a staunch Trump supporter. Thomas stated, “I will work diligently to impeach, remove, and convict. They will have to pry that pen out of my cold, dead hands before allowing this administration to continue as it is.”

Thomas will face Hern in the general election, a significant challenge given Trump’s nearly 35-point victory in Oklahoma in 2024. Despite her strong performance in the Democratic nomination and her lack of political experience, Hern presents a formidable opponent.

Hern has a substantial campaign fund, exceeding $10 million in this cycle alone. In contrast, Thomas’s campaign has raised close to $60,000. Hern has also secured Trump’s endorsement and supports the SAVE America Act, a major policy initiative of Trump.

Hern emphasized the alignment of Oklahoma’s values with Trump’s America First Agenda. He criticized Democrats like Thomas for being disconnected from these values. According to Hern, “Socialist Democrats like N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas are wildly out of touch with the direction Oklahomans want for our country. President Trump and Republicans focus on delivering results.”

This Senate race in Oklahoma is a significant political event, signaling potential changes in representation. The political landscape in Oklahoma is being closely watched as Thomas and Hern prepare for November’s election.
