Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, announced his intention to force a vote on impeaching Trump due to the killing of two U.S. citizens by federal immigration officers earlier this year. Green, known for protesting Trump, introduced a privileged resolution aimed at removing the president from office. Such a resolution allows any lawmaker to mandate the chamber’s consideration of a bill within two legislative days, requiring GOP leaders to hold a vote by the end of Wednesday.

This vote poses a political challenge for Democrats aiming to reclaim the House and Senate in November’s midterm elections. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., generally avoids discussing impeachment, emphasizing that Democrats prioritize issues like high living costs that affect ordinary Americans.

Jeffries and 127 other House Democrats previously joined Republicans to defeat an earlier impeachment attempt by Green in June 2025. This latest effort could mark Green’s final public stand against Trump after losing his primary to a younger Democrat advocating for change.

Green has gained attention for being removed from Trump’s congressional addresses this term. During Trump’s initial address after returning to the White House, Green disrupted the event, and at the State of the Union earlier this year, he held a sign stating, “Black People Aren’t Apes.”

Democratic leaders are preparing for extensive probes into Trump’s administration and associates if they secure victory in the midterms. Green, however, pushed for immediate action, expressing urgency in a letter to House colleagues, emphasizing human losses and urging for a prompt vote.

Green argued that abundant evidence showed Trump was not fit for office, labeling him a threat to democracy with high crimes and misdemeanors. The impeachment resolution highlights the killing by federal officers during a nationwide crackdown on illegal immigration.
