President Orders Reduction of National Monuments in Utah

1 month ago 0

The President has issued orders that significantly cut the size of the Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears National Monuments. This action reduces Grand Staircase-Escalante from approximately 1.87 million acres to about 181,500 acres.

On Monday, President Donald Trump signed these orders, impacting two national monuments in Utah. The reduction means over a million acres of wilderness and areas significant to tribal heritage are now at risk of being opened for mineral, oil, and gas exploration.

This decision has sparked discussions about the balance between conservation efforts and resource exploration. The move affects lands that are not only ecologically valuable but also culturally essential to Indigenous tribes.
